Last night at the 2016 BET Hip-Hop Awards, rapper Snoop Dogg was given the ‘I am Hip Hop’ award, an honour to his legendary career. The award was presented to him by Kendrick Lamar who made a surprise appearance, noting that Snoop Dogg “paved a way into many hearts.” “He mastered the game through tests and challenges that earned him the respect of a college professor, except his game came from the streets,” Lamar said. “He put (me) on game, so I would avoid the same pitfalls. … Snoop Dogg was the God, and continues to be so.” Also paying homage to the legendary rapper were artistes like Dr. Dre and Pharrell Williams. The excited Snoop Dogg said he was heavily misunderstood when he started, and it is amazing seeing how his career turned out. “To all the young rappers in the game, a lot of people don’t understand you. Y’all are misunderstood,” he said. “I was misunderstood at the beginning. So you got to keep pushing, be original and diverse. Hip-hop was created many years ago and it’s taken people so many places. You have to be who you are.” Miami Herald reports that the award show became ‘politically charged’ as rappers like T.I. mounted the stage to deliver a #BlackLivesMatter performance called, ‘We Will Not.’ Other performances came from Christian rapper Lecrae and Big K.R.I.T who performed poems. The show will air on October 4.
